I have some new readers, so I thought it might be a good time to say hello and welcome, and to let you know a little bit about me šāāļø
I am a trained and qualified counsellor š registered with the National Counselling Society. Iām based in South Cambridgeshire, working online and by telephone āļøš©āš». I offer confidential counselling to amazing young people 13+ and adults through individual work and group therapy.
I have had counselling myself, first at the age of 19, but the first counselling I had that really made a difference was at the age of 25. It was long term and I still remember the process of exploring and then removing aspects of me that werenāt mine; behaviours and thinking that firmly belonged to others, and it really did feel like I was plucking them off me, one by one
Understanding this meant I was able to gradually undo the knots that had come to no longer feel okay, and to eventually emerge as the real me š And it was this experience of counselling that stayed with me, hoping that one day I could do that for someone else. I took the long way round and a pretty big diversion as I became a lawyer but eventually I retrained and found my way to being a counsellor, and so now I do get to offer counselling to others, and I absolutely love it.
Your experiences will be different from mine, and so your objectives may also be different, but remembering how impactful it was to have a therapist that walked alongside me, that allowed me to slowly recover and learn to be and accept myself, means that I know how important it is that I offer that to my clients.
Clients come to me for issues that might be around grief, relationships, trauma, and self-esteem, and I work from a person-centred approach, which means that I work with what you bring in the here and now. Sometimes we will look at the stories and experiences that make up your life so that we can understand where your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours come from.
I believe that our feelings need to be acknowledged and understood and, in that way, they can be healed and soothed. But we donāt stay there, we reflect on how you are impacted today, in your feelings about yourself and in your relationship with others, and it is in this gentle process that the changes you want can come. Understanding, acknowledgement, compassion, healing ā¤ļø
